SCORE: Saddam Hussein hanged until dead

If you hadn't heard on the news or in workday conversation on Thursday, the Iraqi high tribunal quickly moved to hang former ruler Saddam Hussein. It was obvious why Judge Munir Haddad chose to expedite the execution after handing out the sentence 60 days prior....

1) He did not want the hanging to interfere with the holiday of Eid al Adha
2) Globally dead poolers clammored for extra points

Saddam was 69 at the time of his hanging for a base score of (125-69) or 56. Three coroners had him on their roster, led by the undisputed 2006 Champions the Rat Pack in their 1.9 confidence slot. Other owners are Brian G at 1.7 and Mark M at 1.0 (Mark had Hussein at his 2.0 in 2005). Ten point bonus to each for the trio shared hit, and it is fair to say that each gets the 20 point "Last terrorist" bonus as well.

Rat 137
Brian G 126
Mark M 86

Standings thru 12/29

I had to make a minimal adjustment to the scoring as we round out the 2006 season - the Rat Pack were nice enough to point out that Jeff S also had Gerald Ford in the 1.9 position.

So, give 64 points to Jeff S who avoids the shutout, but also subtract 10 from each of Brian G, Larry V, and Buy the Farm since Jeff S obliterated the trio hit.

UPDATED STANDINGS!

Rat Pack 343
- Winters (duo), Bentsen (solo) and Allyson (solo) James Brown (duo)

Buy the Farm 290 - Reave (solo), Woods (solo) auerbach (duo) Gerald Ford

Gary H 283 - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (solo) , Jack Palance (solo)

Vince 243 - Coretta Scott King (solo) Red Auerbach (duo) Pinochet (solo)

*Brian G 207 - Rukeyser plus Spelling plus Ford

Robert G - 104 James Brown (duo) x 1.7

Mark M - 148 - Winters, Rukeyser

*Larry V - 82 - Galbraith (solo), Ford

*Jeff S 64 Gerald Ford

* = no Sharon on the roster for 2006

Ariel Sharon update

Did you know that there is a website named "Jewsweek"? Yes, and they have a post today about the passing of Sharon confidant Uri Dan passing away this week.

He is still holding on, that Sharon, a warrior until death. Despite heart and lung malfunctions, Sharon has stayed in a coma for the entire year. I expect he will be on most of the rosters submitted for 2007.

[UPDATE] Seems that a famed Israeli mystic name Uri Geller claims he will wake Sharon on his return to hi homeland. Hold that thought.

Rules of Engagement: New and Improved for 2007!

Ground Rules (let me know when the puns get too bad)

Players ("coroner") submits a blind list of 15 celebrities to me ("Caretaker") by 5:00pm on Friday, January 5, 2007. This game will cease to exist at 11:59 p.m. on December 31, 2007. The celebrites are listed in descending order of confidence, with the top spot being the 2.0 confidence kicker ("CK"), then 1.9, et al to your tenth selection having a 1.1 CK. The last five on your list receive no CK, the points you earn from age and bonus are all that you receive.

Celebrity is defined as a human performer who appears in at least one feature film, authors at least one best seller, stars in at least one popular TV or radio show, performed at an elite level in a major professional sport, served a sovereign nation as its chief executive, social celebrities, heroes of science, luminaries and notables of the arts, or persons in the field of business.

Coroners may appeal the inclusion of any celebrity on other rosters before February 1, 2006. The Caretaker of this pool will resolve final decisions on who qualifies as a celebrity. Any coroner may submit a veto to the other Coroners to have a celebrity reinstated, and a majority vote wins.

Death is defined when determined clinically by a public agency or private hospital, and considered confirmed when reported in the USA TODAY. In the absence of a report on USA Today, the commissioner has the ability to use other sources. Caretaker may assign penalties to any Coroner for any fraud.

SCORING SYSTEM

Points are determined by (125 minus age) multiplied by the confidence kicker, rounded up to nearest whole number.

E.g., if John Doe dies at age 87, your points are (125-87) * 1.8 = 64.8 = 65.

Obviously, regardless of kicker, there is a premium of selecting youth. Also, there certainly will be overlap on the lists; one can gain a competitive advantage by using the confidence kicker.

BONUS SYSTEM (more points for originality!)

  • First Blood = 10 pts and $5 (First score of the year)
  • Solo Hit = 40 pts (only one list has the celebrity)
  • Duo Hit = 20 pts (two lists share celebrity)
  • Trio Hit = 10 pts (three lists share celebrity)
  • Massacre Hit = 50 pts (multiple hits due to same event on one list)
  • Two hits in one week = 40 pts (known as the Acadian Bonus)
  • Three hits in a month = 60 pts (yet to be awarded)
  • Longest filmography on IMDB.com at end of year = 20 pts
  • Last terrorist score = 20 pts

DISCLAIMER

You may not in any way, either directly or indirectly, influence or cause the demise of any personality named in, or associated with, this pool. This will result in your immediate disqualification. Also, you may be opening yourself up to certain legal repercussions, the severity of which is dependent on the jurisdiction, and the diligence of the relevant constabulary in bringing you to justice.

You may place your own name on your list - we call it "Taking One for the Team". However, the above rule still holds true, so if you commit suicide, you will be disqualified

James Brown dead at 73

Jesse Jackson said, "James was dramatic to the end, dying on Christmas Day."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6208615.stm

Two coroners handpicked Brown to truly show he had soul this year - Robert busts his 2006 cherry with a big 1.7 CC, but had to share the duo hit bonus with our new leader Rat Pack who had Brown in the 1.0 slot.

You may remember this prescient Techno flavor from 1991?
